Reaching Goron City in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is one of the most memorable yet challenging journeys in the game. Located in the volcanic Eldin region, the area features extreme temperatures that will cause Link to catch fire without proper preparation. Navigating the mountain trails safely requires a solid strategy and the right gear to survive the intense heat.
Preparing for the Extreme Volcanic Heat
Before you even step onto the path leading up the mountain, you must secure heat protection. The most common entry strategy involves visiting the Foothill Stable, which is located just south of the Maw of Death Mountain. At this stable, you can purchase fireproof elixirs from an NPC named Gaile to ensure safe passage during the initial leg of your journey.
Alternatively, if you prefer a self-sufficient approach, you can hunt for fireproof lizards around the base of the mountains. Cooking these lizards with monster parts at a cooking pot yields the same heat-resistant elixirs without spending rupees. Having at least three elixirs ready will provide enough time to navigate the rocky trails without burning up.
Following the Main Mountain Road
The safest and most straightforward route begins at the Eldin Canyon region, moving north from the Foothill Stable. As you follow the primary dirt path, you will quickly pass the Eldin Tower, which is highly recommended to activate for map visibility. The road is clearly marked but heavily guarded by fire-based enemies like Fire Keese and red Lizalfos.
As the air grows visibly hotter, your normal clothing will start to smoke, signaling that it is time to consume your fireproof elixir. Keep moving along the main path while avoiding standing directly on glowing lava flows or explosive rocks. Sticking strictly to the established trail prevents you from accidentally wandering into high-damage volcanic traps.
Navigating the Southern Mine
About halfway up the mountain road, you will arrive at the Southern Mine, a key checkpoint before the city itself. Here, you will encounter a Hylian miner named Kima who offers a very helpful side quest. If you manage to catch and hand over ten fireproof lizards found around the mining area, he will reward you with the Flamebreaker Armor piece.
Equipping this piece of armor provides permanent fire protection, allowing you to save your remaining elixirs for future exploration. The Southern Mine also serves as an excellent spot to gather rare ores like diamonds and rubies. Once you are properly armored or refreshed by your elixirs, continue heading north along the final stretch of the road.
Arriving Safely in Goron City
After a short trek past the mining facilities, the canyon opens up directly into the bustling center of Goron City. Inside the settlement, you will immediately find a specialized armor shop that sells the complete Flamebreaker set to maximize your defense. The city also features a local inn, a cooking pot, and a shrine that serves as a permanent fast-travel point.
Establishing yourself here allows you to comfortably transition into the main regional quest involving the Divine Beast Vah Rudania. Speaking with the Goron boss, Bludo, triggers the next phase of your adventure high up on the volcano. With your thermal gear secured, you are now fully equipped to explore the rest of this rugged destination.
